Password-protect a PDF before you email it
When an open password helps, how to add one in the browser, and what Protect PDF does not replace.
What an open password actually does
An open password asks the reader to type a secret before the PDF contents appear in Preview, Acrobat, Chrome, and most mobile apps. It stops casual opening on a shared laptop or a forwarded email thread.
It is not the same as a secure portal, DRM, or forensic protection. Anyone who knows the password can save, screenshot, or forward the unlocked contents.
A simple protect workflow
Finish editing first (merge, reorder, blackout). Then open Protect PDF, choose the file, set a password you will remember, and download the locked copy. Send the file and share the password through a different channel when you can (message app vs email).
Test the download once on another device before you rely on it for a deadline.
Unlock when a portal rejects encryption
Many school and job upload forms refuse password-protected PDFs. If you know the password, Unlock PDF creates an open copy for the portal. Protect again afterward if you still need a locked archive for email.
