Browser PDF tools and privacy: what stays on your device
A plain-language look at which SnapPDF tools run locally and when a file may be processed briefly on a server.
Browser-first by design
Many SnapPDF tools — including compress, merge, split, reorder, edit, and image conversions — process bytes in your browser with WebAssembly and JavaScript libraries. For those tools, SnapPDF does not need your file on a server to finish the job.
When a short upload happens
Some conversions (notably high-quality PDF to Word layout) may use a temporary server converter so tables and images survive. Files are processed for the conversion and are not kept as a browsing archive or training set.
If that converter is unavailable, SnapPDF falls back to an in-browser text path so you still get a document.
Habits that still matter
Use HTTPS sites you trust, avoid uploading documents you are contractually barred from processing online, and clear downloads on shared computers. Privacy features do not replace judgment about sensitive content.
