PDF to Word: why tables and borders sometimes disappear

PDFs store drawing instructions, not Word tables

A grid you see in a PDF is often a set of lines and text positions, not a real table object. Word needs rows and cells. Converters must detect those lines and rebuild structure — that works well for clean office tables and less well for decorative layouts.

What SnapPDF tries to keep

When the layout engine is available, SnapPDF uses a converter aimed at text, tables, borders, and images. Browser fallback focuses on editable text and may rebuild simpler grids from geometry when it can.

Scanned pages without selectable text will not produce useful Word tables until you OCR them.

Practical recovery tips

After conversion, check whether Word shows Table Design borders. If text is there but borders are missing, select the cells and re-apply borders — often faster than retyping.

For one-off edits (dates, names), Edit PDF may be simpler than a full round-trip to Word.
