Rotate, reorder, or straighten: fix PDF orientation the right way
When pages are sideways, shuffled, or trapezoid on camera — which SnapPDF tool to use, and how to avoid stretching or baking mistakes into a merge.
Three different problems that look similar
Sideways pages, wrong page order, and skewed phone photos all make a PDF hard to read — but they are not the same bug. Using the wrong fix wastes time and can stretch text or leave pages still upside-down after you merge.
Rotate fixes orientation in 90° steps. Reorder fixes sequence. Straighten fixes perspective on a photo of a paper page. Start by naming which problem you actually have.
When Rotate PDF is the right tool
Use Rotate when a page is already a PDF page but appears on its side or upside-down in Preview or Chrome. Typical causes: a scanner feeder that flipped a sheet, or a phone that saved a landscape capture as a portrait PDF page.
Rotate in 90° increments until text reads normally. You can rotate every page the same way, or only the pages that are wrong. Download and open the file once — do not assume the thumbnail alone is enough.
When Reorder PDF is the right tool
Use Reorder when pages are upright but in the wrong sequence — for example page 2 photographed before page 1. Reorder does not fix sideways text; it only changes which page comes first.
If some pages are sideways and some are out of order, rotate first, then reorder. Doing both in one mental step is how people download a file that is still wrong.
When Scan & straighten is the right tool
Use straighten when the page is a camera photo of paper on a desk: the far edge looks narrower, corners sit on the table, and lines lean. That is a perspective problem, not a 90° rotation.
Place the four corners on the paper edges, apply a document filter, then export JPG or PDF. If you need a multi-page packet, straighten each photo, then build a PDF with JPG to PDF.
A simple decision path
Can you select the text in a PDF reader? If yes and it is sideways → Rotate. If yes and order is wrong → Reorder. If the “page” is really a photo with trapezoid edges → Straighten.
If you are unsure, open the file and tilt your head. If a 90° turn of your neck would fix it, use Rotate. If you would need to shuffle sheets on a desk, use Reorder. If the paper itself looks diamond-shaped, use Straighten.
After orientation is fixed
Merge only after pages read correctly. Compress if email or a portal still rejects the size. Protect with a password only when the recipient can type it — many portals reject encrypted uploads.
Keep the original until the recipient confirms they can open and read the file. Orientation bugs are cheap to fix early and expensive after you have already submitted.
